Monodraught SUNPIPES

Q) Does the SUNPIPE kit include everything that I will need?

A) Yes, the kit includes everything required including the diffuser

Q) What size would you recommend?

A) General rule of thumb is go as big as the rafters/trusses and ceiling joists will allow. For example, if you have 450mm rafters go for the 300mm tunnel over the 230mm. We tend to recommend a 530mm for high ceiling rooms including galleried landings; a 450mm for larger lounges and galleried landings; a 300mm for a hallway, bedroom, kitchen, small lounge or landing and a 230mm for a small en-suite bathroom. Just remember the bigger you go you get roughly 60% more light.

Q) How do I fit the SUNPIPE?

A) Although the SUNPIPE system is extremely easy to fit, we would always recommend gaining the advice of an expert, especially when working at height. Please however see the link to the Installation Guide.

Q) How much light output will I achieve from my new SUNPIPE?

A) The light output will vary according to the time of the year, the position of the SUNPIPE in your roof, the size of the SUNPIPE and the internal finishes of your room. We would always recommend getting the largest SUNPIPE possible for your room to ensure that efficiency as high as possible.

Q) Will the SUNPIPE require any maintenance once fitted?

A) Due to the shape of the dome, the SUNPIPE is self-cleaning. The diffuser fits snugly into the base of the fitting ring to prevent dust and dirt from entering the system and as a result the interior mirror finish surface never requires any maintenance, if fitted correctly. If however, you are fitting a light kit, the bottom ceiling diffuser can be removed but care must be taken not to leave finger marks on the interior mirror finish of the SUNPIPE.

Q) Can I fit a SUNPIPE within my bedroom?

A) You can install a SUNPIPE in any room however you must bear in mind that during the summer months, the room will always be flooded with light and unlike a window, you cannot close the curtains to make the room dark. For this reason, we suggest that motorised shut-off dampers be fitted if it is to be installed within a bedroom, especially if it is a bedroom for small children.

Q) What size of the hole do I need to cut?

A) You will need to enlarge the hole to the sizes shown in the table below:

Q) How long can the SUNPIPE be?

A) A SUNPIPE can be almost any length you require, however you need to be aware of the loss in efficiency for each additional pipe added. On average, loses of 6% of light for every metre of SUNPIPE. We always recommend using the largest SUNPIPE possible for your project, particularly in the UK where we can have any dreary days with little natural daylight. For a very long SUNPIPE, a larger diameter should be used. Please note that there is also a 12% light reduction for every 45° bend. On smaller sizes, the total effective maximum length is 8m and up to 20m on a larger size SUNPIPES.

Q) Do I need Planning Permission to install a SUNPIPE at my property?

A) Broadly speaking, you do not normally require Planning Permission for the installation of a SUNPIPE. However, if your property is situated in Scotland or within a Conservation Area, then specific permission must be obtained from your Listed Building Officer. If in doubt, please contact your local Council for clarification.

Q) What spacing would I need to use for my SUNPIPE?

A) Generally speaking, we recommend 230mm diameter SUNPIPES at 2m; 300mm diameter at 3m; 450mm diameter at 4m and 530mm diameter at 5m interval spacings.

Q) Will the top outer cover of the SUNPIPE discolour over time?

A) The Monodraught SUNPIPE will not discolour because the domes are manufactured from acrylic, therefore there is no discolouration to their domes over the lifetime of the SUNPIPE system. This has been tested and verified by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and the full test is available upon request.

Q) What Guarantee comes with the SUNPIPE?

A) 10 year Guarantee is provided as standard.

Q) Do sun tunnels and SUNPIPES work on a cloudy day?

A) Yes, if you imagine as sun tunnel or SUNPIPE as a window in a tube; you still get light through your windows even on the cloudiest of days, just like you will with a sun tunnel, just not as bright as a sunny day. There is a chart on the website which give the approximate performance on a cloudy and sunny day.

Q) How much will it cost for me to get a SUNPIPE installed?

It should take a competent Roofer/Builder around ½ a day to one full day to fit a SUNPIPE, which can cost anything from £200-£400 on average.

Q) What is a SUNPIPE/Sun Tunnel?

A) Basically, a SUNPIPE can be thought of as a window in a tube; it is a reflective tube that is used to duct sunlight into space where a window or conventional rooflight is not feasible. They are a highly effective way to adding natural daylight to an otherwise dark space in both domestic and commercial properties.

Q) How does a SUNPIPE actually work?

A) The SUNPIPE system collects daylight using a patented high impact acrylic Diamond Dome, passing it through a SUPER- SILVER mirror finished aluminium tube which reflects and directs the Natural Daylight to the diffuser. The diffuser distributes the natural daylight evenly in the room.

Q) What options are available for me to suit my roof?

A) We offer SUNPIPES for Flat and Pitched Roofs. We are also able to provide for either a Pitched roof with Plain Tiles, Slate Tiles or Bold Rolled Tiles. We do also supply Square SUNPIPES which can be fitted on Pitched roofs if you would prefer this option instead of the usual cylinder.

Q) Will installing a SUNPIPE help me save money on my energy bills?

A) On average, your energy costs can be saved as the need for electric lighting can be reduced by as much as 75% depending on your circumstances. It is also sustainable energy in action, not only can SUNPIPE reduce energy it also leads to a considerable reduction in CO2 emissions.

Q) Are there any other benefits of me installing a SUNPIPE?

A) Studies have shown that people work better in a naturally lit environment and it has been shown to alleviate some of the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Exposure to natural daylight is believed to have the following benefits by boosting the production of vitamins and hormones: maintains the Circadian Rhythm, reduces depression, alleviates pain and improves sleep pattern and mood.

Flat Glass Rooflights

Q) How quickly can I get my Flat Glass Rooflight delivered?

A) This depends on the spec of Rooflight ordered. If you go with a stock size Flat Glass Rooflight, then it would be delivered within 2-3 working days (opening Flat Glass Rooflight in a stock size would be 5-7 working days from Order). If you decided to go with a bespoke Rooflight then it would usually be delivered to your site within 12-14 working days from receipt of order and confirmation of layout drawing. Exact lead-time would be confirmed at the point of Quotation and Order.

Q) What Guarantee is provided for my Rooflight?

A) Rooflights are supplied with a 10 year manufacturers Guarantee.

Q) How long will it take for me to have my Rooflight fitted?

A) This is a tricky one to answer, and is dependent on who is fitting the Rooflight. We would always suggest that you seek professional advice regarding the installation of a Rooflight to avoid leakages and/or injury when working at height. Roughly, it would on average take around half a day per Rooflight/Skylight to complete the exterior portion of the installation plus around another half a day for the interior portion of the installation, which would include the drywall/plastering and painting/finishing. The type of ceiling you have within your home (for example either vaulted or flat) would also affect the length of time it takes to complete the interior portion of the Rooflight/Skylight installation.

Q) Do you do supply and fit?

A) We do not provide an installation service, however any local competent and experienced Roofer or Builder should be more than capable of fitting the Rooflight for you.

Q) How much does delivery cost?

A) Delivery to Mainland UK is FREE of charge during normal weekday working hours. Due to the weight and size of a Rooflight, please ensure that there is adequate access to site for the large delivery vehicles. If alternative smaller transport is required, then this may be at an additional cost.

Q) What is a U-value?

A) The U-value or thermal transmittance is the rate of transfer of heat through a structure (which can be a single material or a composite), divided by the difference in temperature across that structure. U-values are measured in watts per square metre per degree Kelvin (W/m²K). Briefly, the better-insulated a structure is, the lower the U-value will be.

Q) Do I need Planning Permission to fit a Roof Light?

A) According to the building regulations for skylights, when it comes to installing Rooflights or skylights as a domestic property, as a general rule there is not a need to apply for Planning Permission however if in doubt expert advice must be sought.

Q) I can see you sell Rooflights with and without a Kerb. What is a Kerb?

A) A kerb or Upstand is used to prevent the Rooflight from coming into contact with actual roof surface which is required for most Building Regulations. The kerb/upstand should be a minimum of 150mm to ensure your unit is fully weatherproofed/watertight. Each spec of Rooflight may require a slightly different Kerb if building the same on site so please ask if in doubt.

Q) What do I need to measure when checking the size requirement?

A) This depends on whether you are building a timber kerb or are using the uPVC 150mm upstand supplied.

If you are building a timber Kerb then this needs to be a minimum 150mm high and the size of the rooflight you order is the external upstand dimension i.e. a 600x600mm glass rooflight will require a hole cut of 450x450mm (75mm wide each side timber kerb gives you an external size of 600x600mm).

If you are using the Upvc kerb supplied the hole you cut in the roof is the size you order ie a 600x600mm glass rooflight you cut a hole 600x600mm.

Q) I want my Flat Glass Rooflight to open for ventilation. Is this possible?

A) We offer both VELUX® Flat Roof Windows INTEGRA® and Mardome Opening Flat Roof Window options which can open electrically. These can be provided with remote controls and rain sensors as an extra over option. We also offer a manual operated option from Mardome however we would recommend that this is only used for a Rooflight size up to 1200x1200mm due to the size/weight of the Rooflight.

Q) I am after an unusual colour of frame for my Rooflight, is that possible?

A) We can provide Flat Glass Rooflights with other RAL colour frames, however the lead-time and costs will be higher than the standard stock options.

Q) What are the benefits of a Flat Glass Rooflight?

A) Skylights and Rooflights can completely change a room for the better. They soak a room in the underutilised natural resource of daylight, making it brighter. Skylights and Rooflights can also provide ventilation into a room, which can be very beneficial when fitted in a kitchen or bathroom environment. They can also add value to your property.

Q) What is cold bridging?

A) Cold bridging is when condensation forms on the inside of the Rooflight framework. This most commonly occurs when the Rooflight has been installed within a high humidity room such as a bathroom or kitchen. We can offer Rooflights with Trickle Vents within the kerb/upstand or manual or electric opening to help eliminate this issue (please ask in in doubt).

Q) I require an unusual size Rooflight. Do you provide these?

A) We can provide Glass Rooflights in almost any size. One of the latest additions to our range, the Mardome Modular Glass Link option provides Rooflights with a maximum span of 3.8m and unlimited length and can be installed at a 2-35 degree (span), 0-15 degree (length) pitch making them the perfect choice for many projects.

Q) My flat roof has a slight pitch can I fit a flat glass rooflight?

A) Yes. They are suitable for mounting at pitches of 2–15°.

The Flat Glass Rooflights are ‘flat’ and so are the kerbs. The pitch of 2° should be on your roof already to enable rain water to run off. This is not always the case however and if you should have a ballasted roof (i.e. stones, tiled or green) then you will need to ensure that the roof openings are pitched accordingly.

AOV Smoke Vents

Q) What specification do the AOV smoke vents meet?

A) Designed, fully tested and certified in accordance with EN 12101-2. Mardome Smoke Vents meet standards for safety, security, non-fragility and fire safety and we offer the full guarantee of an established, accredited UK manufacturer.

Q) Do you sell AOV’s for a Pitched Roof?

A) We do indeed! We offer AOV’s for both Pitched and Flat Roofs, however we presently only supply the VELUX smoke vent option for a pitched roof.

Q) Can I use my AOV for access onto the roof?

A) As standard, the AOV would arrive on site with the actuator in the centre of the AOV and therefore gaining access through the AOV onto the roof would be extremely difficult. We can however reposition the actuator to either the left or right hand side if access onto the roof would be required.

Q) Is there any Building Regulation information that I need to be aware of?

A) This is a tricky one and we suggest that expert advice is taking if in doubt. Please also see link to an article on the topic of AOV smoke vent building regulations which may be of assistance to you.

Q) How does an AOV system actually work?

A) Basically, a AOV smoke vents would be used mainly to control the ventilation of smoke in the event of a fire. Recent changes to Building Regulations in the UK have been made due to the results of investigations into smoke inhalation and the devastating effects that this has on health (research has discovered that more deaths are caused due to smoke inhalation than the fire itself). When a smoke detector is triggered, the AOV will open automatically to create ventilation and allow the smoke to escape. AOV’s are often fitted in stairways. Smoke vents are designed to basically clear all the fire escape lobbies and stair cases of any smoke. They are usually located near to stairs when venting a lobby and always at the head of a stairs. Approved Document Part B explains the travel distances and what height of building has to have lobby ventilation. Any apartment above 1 storey and with at least 2 addresses within it will have to 100% have at least a head of stairs 1.0 meter square smoke vent which can either be an EN12101-2 aluminium chain driven window or an EN12101-2 roof vent/roof hatch depending on the aperture available in the stair case. Always better to vent through the roof using a hatch if the option is there.

Q) How often should an AOV be tested?

A) It is recommended that an AOV system is regularly serviced and maintained by specialised personnel on a regular basis. The AOV should also be serviced at least once every 12 months. AOV’s according to BS9999 Appendix I have to be tested weekly with a log book filled in and left on site (can be one zone) then after 3 months a full test and log filled in and left on site (smoke test and all zones). Every 12 months requires a full test and service by a competent AOV or Fire Alarm specialist with a sign off sheet and a log left on the site .

Q) How quick is delivery?

A) We aim to deliver stock AOV’s within 4-7 working days. If you order a bespoke size then the lead-time can be up to 6 weeks from Order for manufacture. The control units can be also delivered within 3-5 working days as these are also stock items.

Q) I can see you offer a few ranges of AOV. What is the difference?

A) We offer AOV’s from Brett Martin/Mardome, Coxdome/Jetcox, VELUX and Surespan. The main difference is that they are all polycarbonate with a roof ‘window’ other than Surespan which have an aluminium lid and therefore offer no light transmission.

Q) I have an unusual size requirement, can you make me a bespoke AOV?

A) We can make bespoke AOV’s in either aluminium or polycarbonate however the lead-time will be around 4-6 weeks from receipt of Order and the cost reflects on each bespoke case.

Q) How much will delivery cost?

A) We include FREE delivery to Mainland UK during normal weekday working hours. At checkout on our website, some of the UK (Mainly Scottish Highlands) may calculate a delivery charge for you.

Q) What Guarantee or Warranty will my AOV be covered by?

A) As standard, AOV smoke vents would come with a 10 year guarantee however please note that this is subject to the product being fitted in accordance with the manufacturers instruction and that it has been correctly maintained and serviced.

Q) Are all polycarbonate AOV’s listed on the website in Stock?

A) Yes all polycarbonate AOV’s which we have listed on the website (stock size panels) are in stock; however they are not assembled until point of Order hence the 5-7 working day lead-time.

Q) I need a control panel. Do you supply these?

A) We do indeed. We can supply control panels which operation one single AOV or control panels which can operate two AOV’s. We can also offer controls for much larger projects (please get in touch if you have a specific requirement).

Q) Does it come with everything I need?

A) The AOV will come as standard with a 300mm upstand and all necessary wiring to connect to a control panel. You can add a control panel and other accessories including Smoke Sensor and Fire Switch as required.

Q) What size hole do I need to cut for the AOV unit?

A) The size of hole you cut in your roof is the size of AOV unit you order (nominal rooflight size) – see diagram

Q) Should I go for Double or Triple Glazing?

A) Triple layers will reduce solar gain, lower the u value and decrease sound reduction. They also reduce the light transmission slightly. So if you are trying to keep the heat loss down go for the Triple layer. Also a triple layer will meet current Building Regulations.

Q) what is the difference between Clear and Textured/Diffused?

A) Basically, Clear allows you to see straight through the Rooflight, like a window, whereas Textured/Diffused can be thoughts of similarly to a bathroom window where daylight comes through the window but you cannot see through it.

Access Panels

Q) What size of hole do I need to cut in the wall or ceiling? What are access panel sizes?

A) If you are ordering a stock Access Panel sizes then you will need to make the structural opening size (hole in the wall or ceiling) 5mm larger than the panel size (i.e. if the panel size you are ordering is 600x600mm then the hole needs to be 605x605mm). Loft Hatches

Q) What size of Loft Hatch is required?

A) A good starting point is to work out the size of loft hatch you require so that we can manufacture you a Hatch to suit. Ideally, we need to know the structural opening size (hole in the ceiling) with the existing hatch (if any) removed. We will then make the metal frame of the hatch 7mm smaller to ensure that it will fit neatly and easily into this hole.

We would also suggest that you install a Loft Hatch which is as large as possible to make is as easy as possible for you when trying to store your luggage, old children’s toys, Christmas decorations and other bulky items within your loft. Additionally, if you are going to be installing one of our Loft Hatch with Ladder options or a separate Loft Ladder, then you need to ensure that there is enough room to accommodate the Loft Ladder, both within the hole and also within the loft space itself.

Q) Will my new Loft Hatch be insulated?

A) As standard, all Loft Hatches are insulated. We are currently using 50mm polystyrene insulation for the non-fire rated Loft Hatches. The Fire rated loft hatch option comes with a metal backing to the plate on the door and rockwool insulation (please note that this does make the door approx. 5kg heavier than the non-fire rated option).

Q) How can I Order my new Loft Hatch?

A) We have made it even easier for you and you can now order most sizes of Loft Hatch online via our website. Alternatively, you can of course either telephone or email our sales team to discuss your requirements and order.

We can however offer a dust primed option which can be painted when installed each time you paint the ceiling to match. This could be provided with either a Beaded or Picture frame.

Q) Do you make Fire rated Loft Hatches?

A) We do. We can provide both Fire and Non-Fire rated options.

A) We can offer many lock options however as standard, all Fire Rated Loft Hatches would be supplied with a 3-Way Lock and none-Fire Rated Loft Hatches would be supplied with Budget Lock unless over a certain size. We no longer send our Loft Hatches with a bung; instead we send with a collar so that the hole is visible making it much easier for you to use the Tee-Key to open/close the hatch without needing to remove the bung each time. We can also provide alternative lock options if required including tamper proof, anti-ligature and key locks.

Q) How do I go about installing Loft Hatch into an existing hole in my ceiling, or replace an existing Loft Hatch?

A) Please note that prefabricated roof trusses must NOT be cut without consulting a structural engineers as every element of the roof will have been carefully calculated.

Make sure the structural opening is at least 7mm larger than the panel size, back of frame size. E.G a 600x600mm panel size requires a 607x607mm hole size. Remove the door from the frame and place the frame into the set hole.

Fix through the appropriate fixing holes within the frame ensuring the frame is pushed up against the structural opening surround. Check the frame is square by measuring corner to corner.

Refit door and lock in place; the door and frame should be flush. Independent bracing or support may be required to take the weight of the Loft Hatch.

You can then secure/close the door using the Tee-Key provided.

If you decided to go with a Beaded Frame as opposed to a Picture Frame option, then you will need to skim/plaster the frame when plastering your ceiling, but if the Picture Frame option was chosen then no plastering work is required.

Voila, you have completed the installation of your new Loft Hatch! Sit back and enjoy your new slimline Loft Hatch!

As a guide, the weight is in the region of 13-18kg.

Q) How do I open/close my Loft Hatch?

A) The Loft hatch is 80mm deep
