  • What is a fire rated access panel?

A fire rated access panel is a specially designed access point built into walls, ceilings, or other structures, which offers enhanced fire resistance. These panels are constructed using materials that can withstand high temperatures for specified periods, typically ranging from 1 to 4 hours. Their primary purpose is to prevent the spread of fire, ensuring that if a fire breaks out, the panel will act as a barrier, slowing down the fire’s progression. This gives occupants more time to evacuate and allows emergency services a better chance to control the situation. Trade Access Panels offers fire rated access panels that have been rigorously tested to meet stringent fire safety standards, ensuring both safety and compliance.

  • When do I need to use a fire rated access panel?

Using a fire rated access panel is crucial in environments where enhanced fire protection is required. Here are some typical scenarios where their use is either recommended or mandated:

    • Building Regulations: In the UK, certain building regulations stipulate the use of fire rated access panels, especially in commercial properties, multi-storey residential buildings, and places with high occupancy.
    • Fire Separation Walls & Ceilings: Any access point within a wall or ceiling that acts as a fire barrier should be fitted with a fire rated access panel to maintain the integrity of that barrier.
    • Escape Routes: Corridors, stairwells, and other escape routes often require enhanced fire protection to ensure safe evacuation in the event of a fire. Using fire rated access panels in these areas can help maintain a safe passage for occupants.
    • High-Risk Areas: In spaces where there’s a higher risk of fire, such as kitchens, boiler rooms, or storage areas with flammable materials, it’s wise to use fire rated access panels.
    • Protecting Valuable Assets: In areas housing critical infrastructure, such as server rooms or archives, using fire rated access panels can help protect valuable assets from potential fire damage.
    • Peace of Mind: Even if not strictly required by regulations, many property owners opt for fire rated access panels for the added safety and peace of mind they provide.

It’s always advisable to consult with a fire safety expert or building inspector to determine the specific requirements for your property. Trade Access Panels can also provide guidance on the appropriate fire rated solutions for your needs.

  • Can fire rated access panels be painted?

Yes, fire rated access panels can be painted. However, here are a few considerations to keep in mind:

    • Preparation: Before painting, ensure the surface of the panel is clean, dry, and free from any dust or grease. Lightly sanding the surface can help the paint bond more effectively.
    • Paint Type: It’s advisable to use a water-based paint, such as emulsion, for painting fire rated access panels. Oil-based paints or those with high solvent content might affect the fire-resistant properties of the panel.
    • Intumescent Coatings: If you’re considering adding an additional layer of fire protection, there are intumescent paints available. These paints expand when exposed to high temperatures, providing an insulating barrier against fire.
    • Avoid Seals: Be careful not to paint over any intumescent seals or other fire-resistant components of the panel, as this could compromise their effectiveness.
    • Manufacturer’s Guidelines: Always refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines or consult with Trade Access Panels before painting to ensure you’re using compatible products and not compromising the panel’s fire rating.

  • Can fire rated access panels be installed by anyone?

While fire rated access panels come with installation instructions and can technically be installed by anyone with basic DIY skills, there are several considerations to bear in mind:

    • Expertise: Due to the critical safety role these panels play, it’s highly recommended that they be installed by professionals or individuals with experience in fitting access panels. Incorrect installation can compromise the fire resistance of the panel.
    • Building Regulations: In the UK, certain building regulations may require fire rated access panels to be installed by certified professionals to ensure they meet the necessary safety standards.
    • Tools & Equipment: Proper installation might require specific tools and equipment to ensure a tight and secure fit. This is especially important to maintain the integrity of the fire barrier.
    • Seals & Insulation: Ensuring that intumescent seals and insulation are correctly positioned and intact is crucial. A professional will be adept at ensuring these components are not compromised during installation.
    • Inspection & Certification: In some cases, after installation, the panels might need to be inspected and certified by a fire safety expert or building inspector to confirm they meet the required standards.

While it’s possible for someone with good DIY skills to install a fire rated access panel, due to the safety implications, it’s often best to engage a professional or someone with experience in this area. Trade Access Panels always recommends consulting with experts to ensure the highest standards of safety and compliance.
